Getting Started with Canvas

The Canvas Learning System at MCC

Canvas is the new Learning System for Maricopa. Canvas is a replacement for Blackboard and WebCT. It allows instructors to upload content and grades so that students can access them 24-7. If you have any questions, please contact the HelpCenter at helpcenter@mesacc.edu or (480) 461-7217.


The Canvas Tutorials are available at http://ctl.mesacc.edu/canvas/tutorials. Please review these before getting started in Canvas.

Technical Requirements for Canvas

    You will need a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) and Adobe Flash main Canvas functionality. More info here .

Logging into Canvas

    Logging in through the MyMCC portal:
    Go to the MCC Homepage at http://www.mesacc.edu Click on MyMCC at the top Login with your MEID and password and click on the Canvas link at the left. You may need to login a 2nd time.

Navigation / Important Tips

    Helpful Menus - Look for the Todo and Recent Feedback menus

    To Do/Coming Up – Upcoming assignments will be highlighted in the To Do and Coming Up menus so you can quickly see what you need ‘To Do’ within the next week. Recent Feedback – Recent grades will appear under the Recent Feedback menu.
    Global Menus - Review the menus at the top of Canvas
    Courses (and Groups) – Click on a course or group in the drop down list to access one of your courses/groups. Hint: don’t click on the menu, simply highlight your mouse over it. Assignments – List of upcoming assignments in all of your classes. Grades – List of grades in all of your classes. Calendar - Global calendar of due dates from all of your classes.
    Inbox - Send a message to your instructor or other students in your classes through the Inbox. Type in part of their n ame and it should auto-fill in for you. Send text, attachments or an audio message.

    Profile - Set your profile picture and/or setup your Notifications within the Profile menu.
    Ways to Contact – Add an alternate e-mail address, a cell phone, a Facebook account, or a Twitter account. Hint: uncheck the box if you don’t want other students to see you have a Facebook/Twitter account. Notifications – Tell Canvas what information you want to receive to your ‘Ways to Contact’ and how often. Hint : try once a day at first until you are familiar with how often messages get sent to you. Select Announcements and/or Conversation messages to start.

Inside a Canvas Course

    Navigation - The Course Menu (at the left of each course) can be used to access the content, assignments, and grades within the course.

    Grades - You can view your Grades in a course by clicking on the Grades link at the left but you can also ‘try out’ grades. If you want to see what effect getting an A on the Final will be, simply type in a prediction for your Final and Canvas will show you! This feature will not change your scores but can help you decide what scores you need to earn to get the grade you want.

Help! My Class is not in Canvas!

Mesa Community College is one of the first of Maricopa Colleges to move over to a new online learning system called Canvas. We are no longer using WebCT. To access Canvas, you can click on the Canvas link in the left column of your MyMCC Portal (under Applications) or directly at the URL: learn.maricopa.edu.


You may not see your courses in MyMCC or in your Canvas Classroom:

  • If you recently created your MEID account, or registered for classes, it may take up to 24 hours before your account information is activated in Canvas. It usually doesn't take that long, but at peak times, such as the beginning of a semester, this may be the case.
  • Not all classes have Canvas content associated with them. If you suspect that your class should have Canvas content, please contact your instructor for clarification. You may also contact us during our Hours of Operation and we can verify if your class has Canvas content associated with it.
    • When contacting HelpCenter, please have your class and section number information handy (for example: WST209 20820).
  • At the beginning of a semester, sometimes instructors have not yet gotten their Canvas content ready, or made their course live. Please contact your instructor for clarification.
  • PLEASE NOTE: If you cannot get in to Canvas, the best way to get help is to contact us. Comments left on this page are not checked in a timely manner and are not an official means of getting technical support!
